Taiwan’s Cabinet has backed plans for a new specialized center dedicated to helping Taiwan become a bilingual nation by 2030. The proposal for a Bilingual Nation Development Center still has to pass Taiwan’s legislature before it can become law.
Premier Su Tseng-chang says the new center would provide a focus for government resources and draw on the creativity and expertise of civic groups. He says he hopes the center can help promote the English language around the country and encourage bilingual professional development.
Taiwan’s flagship Bilingual Nation 2030 goal aims to turn the country into a bilingual Mandarin and English-speaking environment by the year 2030. The aim is to improve the competitiveness of Taiwan’s workforce and raise Taiwan’s international standing.
The National Development Council, which is behind the policy, says the new center will ensure ministries are working together according to plan. It says the center will also allow for more oversight over the government’s policies.
The council says it hopes the center will help foster a new generation of bilingual talent in Taiwan.
