Taiwan reported two new local cases of COVID-19 on Friday. The country also reported five more imported cases among people arriving in Taiwan.
The addition of one more death from the virus brings the death toll from the beginning of the pandemic to 839. The deceased was a man in his seventies with pre-existing health conditions.
The two local cases announced on Friday both tested positive outside of quarantine after seeking medical treatment. The first is a man in his sixties who began experiencing symptoms on September 7, while the second is a child in middle school who began experiencing symptoms on September 8. Right now, authorities do not know the source of either infection.
Health Minister Chen Shih-chung says authorities are carrying out testing and are isolating students at the second case’s middle school.
Chen also gave an update on the cluster infection in Taoyuan. He says all close contacts of the confirmed cases have tested negative in a second round of testing. Chen says that is why he thinks the Taoyuan outbreak is now under control.
Chen also says that there were no new cases linked to a cluster infection at a preschool in New Taipei City.
The Friday totals of local cases (by city/county) are as follows:
New Taipei City: 1
Taipei City: 1
Taiwan also recorded five imported cases of COVID-19 on Friday. They include travelers arriving from the United States, Turkey, Japan, and Armenia.
