Marshall Islands and Guatemala speak out for Taiwan at UN
Marshall Islands President David Kabua speaks on Taiwan's behalf in an address to the UN General Assembly.

As this year’s UN General Assembly Debates continue, two more of Taiwan’s diplomatic allies have used their speaking time to voice support for Taiwan.

On Wednesday, the second day of the debates, President of the Marshall Islands David Kabua said in a pre-recorded video that Taiwan should be included with equality and respect in UN organizations and events. He said these ought to include the WHO, the International Civil Aviation Organization, the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change, and events related to the UN’s Sustainable Development Goals.

Kabua also said that the 1971 UN resolution giving China’s UN seat to Beijing and stripping Taipei of its representation says nothing about the Taiwan issue. He said that this resolution therefore does not prevent Taiwan’s inclusion in UN organizations.

Also on Wednesday, Guatemalan President Alejandro Giammattei experience, abilities, and expertise can help strengthen bilateralism amidst global challenges.

A third ally with speaking time on Wednesday, Honduras, did not mention Taiwan during its remarks. However, Honduras has written to the UN Secretary General for six consecutive years to voice its support for Taiwan’s inclusion in the UN.
