Former Vice President Chen Chien-jen addressed a global summit on COVID-19 hosted by the US on Wednesday.

In a pre-recorded film, Chen thanked nations that have donated COVID-19 vaccine doses to Taiwan.

He also highlighted Taiwan’s own donations of medical supplies to help other countries fight COVID-19. This includes donations of over 54 million medical masks for more than 80 countries. Chen said that once Taiwan has enough COVID vaccine doses to meet its own needs, it will also begin vaccine donations to help countries in need.

The foreign ministry says this is the second high-level global discussion on disease that Taiwan has taken part in at the United States’ invitation since March.

Foreign Ministry Spokesperson Joanne Ou says that Taiwan has performed well in the face of the COVID-19 pandemic and that it has been proactive in sending humanitarian aid where it is needed since the pandemic began. She said that this has won the approval of the US and the international community. She said that Taiwan is happy to continue working with countries that share its values on eradicating COVID-19.
