The Pacific island nation of Nauru has become the fourth country to urge for Taiwan’s inclusion in the UN at this year’s UN General Assembly debates.

On Thursday, Nauruan President Lionel Aingimea delivered a pre-recorded speech to the assembly that included several remarks about Taiwan.

Aingimea called Taiwan a “true friend” of Nauru and included Taiwan in a list of nations Nauru has to thank for its success in keeping out COVID-19.

He said that Taiwan is an important partner in the international community’s fight against COVID-19, and that Taiwan’s model success in handling its domestic COVID outbreaks cannot be ignored. He said that Taiwan is ready and willing to share its experience with the World Health Assembly.

He also highlighted Taiwan’s assistance to other countries seeking to implement the UN’s Sustainable Development Goals. He said that Taiwan should have the right to equally take part in implementing these goals and should be included in the UN program “Our Common Agenda”.

He urged the UN to accept Taiwan in line with the UN principles of universality and equality.
