Taiwan is asking Japan to accept Taiwan’s Medigen COVID-19 vaccine as qualification for its upcoming eased quarantine requirements.  Japan is loosening its quarantine requirements for those vaccinated with the Pfizer, Moderna or AstraZeneca vaccine.

Japan will cut its 14-day quarantine for arrivals to 10 days of quarantine at an accommodation of their choosing beginning October 1.

As the current list of acceptable vaccines does not include Taiwan’s local Medigen vaccine, the foreign ministry said it would provide Japan with more information on the vaccine.

Taiwan’s Medigen vaccine is made by Medigen Vaccine Biologics and has passed Phase 2 trials and received Emergency Use Authorization (EUA) in Taiwan.

Since it has not passed Phase 3 trials, there is no efficacy data. Taiwan used a process called immunobridging, which showed it had produced more antibodies than those who had received the AstraZeneca vaccine. Medigen is a protein subunit vaccine and is currently undergoing Phase 3 trials in Paraguay.
