The foreign ministry says that democracies worldwide are showing increased support for the recent deepening of ties between Taiwan and Lithuania.
Lithuania and Taiwan are set to establish representative offices in each other’s capitals in the near future. The announcement of this plan has angered China, which responded by recalling its ambassador to Lithuania and demanding that Lithuania remove its ambassador to Beijing.
The US government and the European Parliament have stood by Lithuania as it faces down China’s displeasure.
In addition, Slovenia, the current president of the Council of the EU, has called for solidarity with Lithuania from other EU member states. In a letter to the leaders of the other EU states, Slovenia’s Prime Minister said that EU member states have a right to deepen their ties with Taiwan.
