With overseas travel still largely off the table, Taiwanese people are expected to continue travelling in droves here at home. A travel expo held Friday shows just how much pent-up demand there is here for a chance to hit the road.
The event was delayed for months, and it was smaller than usual, but still, people lined up for hours ahead of time. This travel show, which opened Friday, offered up a chance to win special discount coupons from the transportation ministry. And even those who didn’t win still had plenty of opportunities to score a great deal.
A domestic outbreak of COVID-19 that started in May put a damper on what had been a renaissance in domestic travel. But with that outbreak now firmly under control, domestic travel is expected to boom once more. People who would normally spend their vacation time traveling abroad have learned since the start of COVID to appreciate once more the magic that lies within Taiwan’s borders.
And hotels and travel outfitters have noticed. At this show, they offered deep discounts and high-value packages in an effort to get a piece of the booming domestic travel market. Stiff competition means that wherever travelers decide to go, they will end up saving big.
