President Tsai Ing-wen has congratulated Fumio Kishida on taking office as the prime minister of Japan. Kishida became the 100th person to assume the role after winning a majority of votes in both chambers of the legislature on Monday.

The Presidential Office has wished the Kishida administration success in implementing its policy goals and promoting development across the country.

Presidential Office spokesperson Xavier Chang has also thanked outgoing Prime Minister Yoshihide Suga for his support of Taiwan. Under Suga, Japan donated five batches of COVID-19 vaccines to Taiwan, at a time when supplies in Taiwan were scarce.

Taiwan’s foreign ministry has also congratulated Kishida on his election as prime minister. The ministry says ties between Japan and Taiwan are stronger than ever and the countries share a firm friendship.

The foreign ministry says it hopes Japan and Taiwan can build on the achievements of the previous administration to strengthen bilateral ties. It says that Taiwan and Japan can work together to promote peace, stability, and prosperity in the Indo-Pacific region.
