The foreign ministry says that the United States’ policy towards Taiwan will not change. That’s after a phone call between US President Joe Biden, and Chinese President Xi Jinping during which both sides agreed to abide by the “Taiwan agreement.”
On Wednesday, Foreign Ministry Spokesperson Joanne Ou said that Biden has emphasized the United States’ rock-solid commitment to Taiwan ever since he took office. She says that Taiwan and the US maintain close communication in the face of Chinese military, diplomatic, and economic threats.
Also on Wednesday, Presidential Office Spokesperson Chang Tun-han said that the office has confirmed that US policy towards Taiwan will not change. Chang said that the United States will continue abiding by the Taiwan Relations Act and the Six Assurances, which guide US policy towards Taiwan and promise aid despite lack of official diplomatic relations.
Chang also said that the United States is gravely concerned by the situation in the Taiwan Strait, and considers regional peace and stability to be a shared responsibility of all countries in the region. He said Taiwan will continue contributing to maintaining peace and stability in the Strait and the Indo-Pacific region, and that Chinese authorities should do their part as well.
