President Tsai Ing-wen says that the United Nations would be stronger if it included Taiwan. Tsai was speaking Thursday in a pre-recorded address tied to the release of a new book on the consequences of the UN's 1971 decision to strip China's seat from Taiwan and give it to Beijing instead.

Tsai said that Taiwan has shown it is capable of making valuable contributions to the international community, and this should further support its bid to join the UN. Tsai also said that many countries spoke up for Taiwan at this year's UN General Assembly.

Tsai said the book allows readers to understand the long-lasting effects of the UN's decision on the course of history and Taiwan's position in the international community.

Tsai said that Taiwan and its people are committed to rejoining the UN. Over the past few years, Taiwan's economic growth and successful management of the COVID-19 pandemic have strengthened its ties with many other countries. Tsai says that these achievements show that joining the UN would not only be beneficial to Taiwan, but also to the UN itself.
