A total of 28,700 people across 3,047 companies are on furlough in Taiwan, according to the latest statistics from the labor ministry. These latest numbers reflect an increase of 1,650 people on furlough, with an additional 126 companies participating in furlough programs since the labor ministry’s last report.
According to the labor ministry, more people have been furloughed because of difficulties in the shipping and cargo sectors. Travel agencies and airlines also continue to suffer due to the pandemic, with 9,011 people from 1,280 companies in those industries in furlough.
The food, beverage, and hospitality sector also saw an increase of 500 furloughed workers, but according to the labor ministry, that trend is an anomaly because a larger restaurant chain in Taiwan has temporarily downsized its operation.
