Foreign Minister Joseph Wu says the United States and China will not issue a new joint communiqué. Wu’s statement at the legislature on Monday comes after US President Joe Biden and Chinese President Xi Jinping agreed to hold a virtual meeting before the end of the year.
The US State Department says its “one China” policy, dictating the shape of ties with China and with Taiwan, has for decades been based on three documents. Those documents are the Taiwan Relations Act of 1979, the Six Assurances given to Taipei in 1982, and the Three Communiqués. The communiqués are a collection of three joint statements, signed between 1972 and 1982.
Wu says the United States and China will not issue a fourth communiqué. He says that the United States will continue to support Taiwan, and US backing for Taiwan is “rock solid”.
Wu says the foreign ministry received assurances from the US officials that there had been no change to US-China ties earlier this month. That came after President Biden said the United States and China would abide by “the Taiwan agreement”, following a phone call with Xi Jinping.
US officials say there has been no change to the United States “one China” policy.
