Taiwan needs to take part in the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC). That’s the word from Foreign Ministry
Spokesperson Joanne Ou on Tuesday as the COP26 Summit on climate change is scheduled to take place in early November in the UK.
On Tuesday Ou said that climate change is an important global issue that Taiwan cares about. Taiwan plans to hold international forums with think tanks and host activities focused on youth and climate change. The foreign ministry is working with the Environmental Protection Administration and relevant ministries to align Taiwan’s policies with international standards.
In order for Taiwan to achieve zero carbon emissions, Taiwan needs to participate in the UNFCCC and the Paris Agreement. The agreement is a legally binding international treaty on climate change that was adopted in Paris in 2015. Ou said the foreign ministry and Taiwan’s representative office in the UK will consult with relevant organizations and jointly host a number of activities during the COP26 Summit.
