Seasonal winds coupled with clouds and moisture from China will bring heavy rains and strong winds to Taiwan over the next few days. This weekend might be better for staying in and catching up on old TV shows, rather than outdoor activities.
Winter is coming! For many in the northern hemisphere this means snow and sub-zero temperatures. In northern Taiwan, though, winters bring rain, cold, rain, and then some more rain.
Seasonal winds carrying clouds and moisture from China are expected to bring extreme precipitation and strong winds this weekend. The Central Weather Bureau has issued extremely heavy rain warnings for New Taipei City and Keelung areas, and mere heavy rain advisories for Taipei and Taoyuan. Scattered showers may affect most other parts of the country.
Besides rain, Taiwan will experience relatively cold temperatures, with lows down to 17C in the north. High precipitation and strong winds may also contribute to heightened risk of landslides and rockfalls. Hikers might want to bend the knee to nature in the coming days, and wait for better conditions before venturing out.
It seems rain will be king in the north at least until next week, and we will likely have to endure more winds of winter until a dream of spring finally comes true next year.
