The bright orange and red maple leaves seem to glow in the sunlight on Taichung's Fushoushan farm. The scenic trails through the forest have attracted tourists from all over Taiwan. One group says that they've come all the way from Tainan, a five-hour trip, just to get a glimpse of these beautiful autumn leaves.
Not even the cold weather can deter them. At 2,200 meters above sea level, the temperatures hover around 12℃ on Fushoushan farm during the day. However, this temperature change is part of the reason that the leaves slowly change from green to brilliant orange and red.
The deputy director of the farm, Wang Ren-jhu says that the season for fall foliage typically begins by November, and there are five different kinds of maple trees on the property. Wang says that the first leaves to change color are usually on the Japanese maple trees, and the rest of the trees follow suit until December. At that point, the leaves fall and the farm's grounds are covered in a spectacular array of colors.
Such a wide selection of maple trees is very rare in Taiwan, so people know that in autumn, they“oughta”take advantage of these fleeting fall festivities.
