US Secretary of State Antony Blinken’s recent remarks backing Taiwan’s participation in UN structures have induced a strong and predictable reaction from the Chinese authorities and Communist Party mouthpieces.
Secretary Blinken said on Tuesday that all UN member states should support Taiwan’s “robust” participation in the UN system. On Wednesday, Chinese government-controlled TV station CCTV called this a challenge to the “One China Principle”. It said China is strongly resentful and rejects this statement.
Also on Wednesday, the Chinese government’s Taiwan Affairs Office said that it was unacceptable to promote Taiwan’s admission to the UN and “plot independence by way of participation in international events.” Its spokesman Ma Xiaoguagn said that Taiwan does not have the right to be a part of the UN, and the People's Republic of China is the sole legal representative of all of China. According to him this also includes Taiwan.
Ma said that the United States has for some time been issuing statements that violate UN resolutions, the “One China Principle”, and the “Three Communiqués”, which established a framework for US-China relations. He said these statements are sending the wrong signal to what he called “Taiwanese independence forces”.
