A Latin American and Caribbean Formosa Club passed a joint statement on Tuesday calling on the international community to support Taiwan’s participation in international organizations.

Government officials and parliamentarians from 21 countries as well as the Central American Parliament participated in the first general meeting of the Formosa Club. The list of attendees included the prime minister of St. Vincent and the Grenadines, Ralph Gonsalves, and the President of the Central American Parliament, Fanny Salinas.

The joint statement urges the international community to support Taiwan’s professional, pragmatic, and contributory participation in international organizations. The statement names bodies such as the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change, INTERPOL, and the Comprehensive and Progressive Agreement for Trans-Pacific Partnership.

Prime Minister Gonsalves said at the meeting that he is gravely concerned about the situation in the Taiwan Strait. He said differences should be settled through dialogue, and resorting to violence or intimidation is not helpful to maintaining peace in the region.
