Labor ministry aims to lift migrant worker entry ban in November
Labor Minister Hsu Ming-chun

Labor Minister Hsu Ming-chun says that she wants to lift Taiwan’s ban on migrant workers entering the country in November. That came during a report Hsu gave to the legislature on Monday.

On May 19, Taiwan banned all new migrant workers from entering the country, amid a spike in local COVID-19 cases. The temporary suspension worsened Taiwan’s ongoing labor shortage.

Hsu says that the labor ministry has submitted a plan on lifting the ban to Taiwan’s health authorities. She says that if everything goes according to plan, then migrant workers will, once again, be allowed into Taiwan later this month.

Hsu says that her ministry plans to give priority to fully-vaccinated migrant workers first. Each applicant’s inoculation status will be verified by one of Taiwan’s overseas representative offices.

Migrant workers must then provide a negative PCR test upon arrival, and then undergo a 14-day quarantine. Once the quarantine period is complete, workers must take a final PCR test and undergo seven days of self-health management.
