Taiwan is set to showcase its achievements in fighting climate change on the sidelines of the 2021 United Nations Climate Change Conference. Deputy Environment Minister Shen Chih-Hsiu said that this “Taiwan Day” event is scheduled for November 7.
The 2021 United Nations Climate Change Conference (COP26) opened on Sunday, and is taking place in Glasgow in the UK through November 12. However, Taiwan’s exclusion from the UN and the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change mean that it can only take part in the event as an observer with NGO status.
Deputy Environment Minister Shen Chih-Hsiu says that Taiwan hopes the event will demonstrate that Taiwan will not be absent from the global fight against climate change. Shen also says Taiwan must show its commitment to achieve net zero carbon emissions by 2050 and search for ways of taking part in events related to the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change.
Shen says that the fight against climate change is a global fight, one that every country needs to take part in. Shen says that given Taiwan’s adaptive resilience and its expertise in climate science and supply chain technology, excluding from the fight is a loss both for Taiwan and for the fight against climate change itself.
