Deputy Foreign Minister Alexander Yui says that the foreign ministry remains optimistic about ties with Central American ally Honduras. That came during a legislative session on Wednesday.
Honduras is set to hold a presidential election on November 28. There’s concern that a change in the country’s leadership may affect its diplomatic ties with Taiwan. Opposition candidate Xiomara Castro has said that if elected, she will shift ties from Taiwan to China.
Legislators asked Yui to weigh in on what might happen in the aftermath of Honduras’ election.
Yui says that Taiwan has made every effort to show that it is a reliable and trustworthy partner to Honduras. He says that he traveled to Honduras in September and met with local officials to make sure Taiwan-Honduras ties are solid.
Yui says that China constantly tries to poach Taiwan’s allies. However, he said that it has failed to do so this year, even after promising to donate COVID-19 vaccine doses to countries that desperately need them. Yui says that is the reason why he remains “optimistic”.
