Taiwan government official Chiu Tai-san says Xi Jinping is “paving the way” to remain in power for another term of office next year. Chiu’s comments at the legislature on Monday come as the Chinese Communist Party kicks off the sixth plenary session of the 19th Central Committee.

According to Chinese media, the party will review its “major achievements and historical experience” over the past century in a draft resolution. It is only the third time that the party has put forward a resolution on the party’s history, following similar resolutions in 1945 and 1981.

Chiu Tai-san, who leads Taiwan’s Mainland Affairs Council, the body responsible for China policy, says the resolution will revolve around the role of Xi Jinping. Chiu says the main purpose of the resolution is to pave the way for Xi to remain in office at the 20th Party Congress in 2022.

Chiu says that the Chinese Communist Party is facing a number of internal and external challenges. He says he expects Beijing to continue its policy of denying Taiwan a space in the international community.

Chiu says that the Mainland Affairs Council will continue to monitor developments in China and respond accordingly.
