A township in Changhua county is having an annual banquet, a tradition around this time of year. This will be the event’s ninth year. All the local chefs will be showing off their culinary skills and bringing out the best in local specialties.
A grand banquet will be taking place on November 27 and 28 in Lukang Township. It is so popular that bookings are filled literally in a matter of seconds.
All the master chefs bring out their best, from grilled mullet roe to a special kind of spring roll, and Lukang’s greatest delicacy of all: fresh, plump oysters.
This year, there’s even something new on the menu: a sweet dessert called cow tongue pastry. Don’t worry: there are no actual cows’ tongues involved. These pastries get their name because they are shaped like cows’ tongues. This particular style of pastry is famous in Lukang. There are always long lines of people waiting in front of local shops to buy them.
Because of the COVID-19 pandemic, the organizers are only opening 100 tables for reservations on each of the festival’s two days this year. That makes for a total of 200 tables. Last year, they had 400 tables. Each table only costs NT$4,000 or US$144, which is considered a generous discount. The menu consists of five appetizers, ten main courses, and four desserts. You can even take home the beautiful porcelain bowls and plates the food is served on once you’re done eating.
