The foreign ministry has hailed the recent visit to Taiwan by a delegation of US lawmakers as evidence of Washington’s unwavering support for Taiwan. The statement on Monday comes after a three-day visit last week by a group of US lawmakers led by Senator John Cornyn.

The foreign ministry says the trip clearly demonstrates the importance that Washington attaches to US-Taiwan ties. The ministry also says it hopes that the visit will help to further cement the firm friendship between Taiwan and the US Congress.

The US delegation included Senators John Cornyn, Mike Crapo, Mike Lee and Tommy Tuberville, along with Representatives Tony Gonzales and Jake Ellzey. All of them are members of the Republican Party.

The group arrived last week on Tuesday, and met with President Tsai Ing-wen, National Security Council chief Wellington Koo, and Defense Minister Chiu Kuo-cheng, among others. The delegation then left Taiwan on Thursday.

Taiwan’s foreign ministry says Senator John Cornyn is a strong supporter of Taiwan in the US Senate. It says Cornyn was an important backer of the TAIPEI Act of 2019, along with last year’s CHIPS for America Act and this year’s Taiwan Deterrence Act.

The ministry has thanked Cornyn and the other members of the delegation for their support.
