Former Vice President Chen Chien-jen has been invited to deliver a speech in Lithuania on Saturday. He will be speaking on democracy and Taiwan’s achievements at a democracy forum in Lithuania. That’s the word from Taiwan’s foreign ministry on Tuesday.
In his speech at the Future of Democracy forum in Vilnius, Chen will also speak about Taiwan’s COVID-19 prevention experience, and how Taiwan deals with disinformation and external threats from China.
Prior to his arrival in Lithuania, Chen will visit the Auschwitz-Birkenau Memorial in Poland. The memorial is the biggest concentration camp run by Nazi Germany during World War II. Taiwan had sponsored a virtual program run by the memorial last year to educate the public on the tragedy of the Holocaust.
Taiwan and Lithuania ties have been growing stronger as the two sides plan to set up representative offices in each other’s capital. Lithuania is welcoming a Taiwanese Representative Office in Vilnius despite diplomatic and economic sanctions from Beijing.
Taiwan and Lithuania have also helped each other during the pandemic. Lithuania has donated over 250,000 vaccine doses to Taiwan while Taiwan donated many masks to the Baltic nation. Lithuania is calling on the world to stand with Taiwan against pressure from China.
