Global LGBTQ pride organization InterPride has changed the way it refers to Taiwan on its website, dropping the designation “region of Taiwan” in favor of simply “Taiwan”. That comes shortly after the organization announced that the city of Kaohsiung in southern Taiwan has won its bid to host the global pride event WorldPride in 2025.

In a newly updated version of a press release congratulating Kaohsiung, InterPride refers explicitly to “Kaohsiung Pride in Taiwan” and “Kaohsiung City, Taiwan”.

InterPride says it had previously avoided the term Taiwan because it is seeking general consultative status with the UN's Economic and Social Council. It says it therefore felt bound by UN rules.

Taiwan was stripped of the China seat at the UN in 1971 due to UN General Assembly Resolution 2758. Though the resolution only addresses China’s seat at the UN, and does not make reference to Taiwan’s international representation, many international organizations have since eschewed direct references to Taiwan.

The foreign ministry has welcomed InterPride’s decision to use the term “Taiwan”, and said that the international community should be aware of the increasingly broad and improper interpretation of UN resolution 2758.
