The World Movement for Democracy, a global network advocating democracy, is set to hold its 2022 assembly in Taipei. This will be the movement’s eleventh assembly since its founding in 1999, and the first assembly held in Taiwan.

The assembly will see experts and democracy activists from several dozen countries gather to discuss ways of building resilient democratic systems.

On Thursday, the Taiwan Foundation for Democracy issued a press release saying that the assembly will also respond to the current challenge of authoritarianism while nurturing democratic vitality. The press release says that the assembly will also include young democratic activists to share their visions for democracy.

The statement says that the young generation has responded to governmental dysfunction and new challenges like COVID-19 and climate change by coming up with new forms of organization and new ways of putting democratic values into practice. It says the assembly will see youth leaders devise strategies to launch political action and achieve their hopes for democracy.

The statement says that even though authoritarianism threatens Taiwan and global values of freedom, Taiwan remains a thriving democracy and an example for supporters of democracy to learn from. It says that as Taiwan supports other countries’ efforts to defend their democracies, advocates for democracy around the world must also stand with Taiwan.
