Foreign Minister Joseph Wu says that the cross-strait situation has never before been as tense as it is now. That came during an interview with German-language Swiss broadcaster SRF, broadcast on Wednesday.
Wu said that China has raised the level of its military threat towards Taiwan, and that Taiwan must be prepared to defend itself in a worst-case scenario.
At the same time, however, Wu said that Taiwan is demonstrating its preparedness and determination to defend itself to the international community.
Wu said that China is using cross-strait tensions as a means of distracting its citizens’ attention away from serious domestic issues. He said the worse those issues become, the more danger Taiwan will find itself in.
At the same time, however, he said that the US has a rock-solid commitment to Taiwan’s security, something he said top US officials have repeatedly said on multiple occasions. He also said that Taiwan is working to strengthen its own defenses, and is determined to defend itself no matter when conflict may break out.
