A visiting US lawmaker has told President Tsai Ing-wen that the United States’ commitment to maintaining a free and secure Indo-Pacific is “stronger than ever”. Representative Mark Takano, who spoke at the Presidential Office Building on Friday, is one of a group of five members of the US Congress currently visiting Taiwan.
Takano says the United States’ commitment to Taiwan is “rock solid” and has remained “steadfast” as US-Taiwan ties have grown stronger. He says Taiwan is a democratic success story, a reliable partner, and a force for good in the world.
Takano says that the United States and Taiwan are working together to fight the COVID-19 pandemic and support trade and investment ties. He also says Taiwan and the United States are promoting transparency, human rights, inclusion, and the rule of law, both in the Indo-Pacific region and around the world.
Takano says that his congressional delegation’s visit is the third time this year US lawmakers have travelled to Taiwan. He says he hopes frequent travel by US policymakers to Taiwan can become “business as usual again”.
