People in Taiwan may be eligible for their third vaccine dose as early as January 1st, 2022. That was the word from health minister Chen Shih-chung on Tuesday. Chen says that part of the reason for this rapid preparation is because of the new Omicron variant and the fact that there are over 42,000 frontline medical workers who already received their second dose six months ago.

The Central Epidemic Command Center has opened up the option of mixing vaccine brands for the third jab, but states that not all people are ideal candidates.

The minister says that getting a third dose is currently recommended for people in stable health conditions over the age of 18, although people over 65 years old, nursing home residents, and frontline medical workers will have priority.

Chen says that people who have received the AstraZeneca vaccine should be safe receiving any mRNA vaccine. However, Chen says that people who have already received mRNA vaccines like Moderna and BioNTech should not try to get AstraZeneca for their second or third dose.

Research both within Taiwan and globally indicates that mixing vaccine brands may increase the chance of negative, short-term side effects, although it may also offer more effective protection. Chen says that no one will be required to mix vaccine brands, as everyone's bodies and personal health are different.

The CECC says it will prepare a clear explanation regarding the different options for a third vaccine dose, so that people can make the best choice for themselves.
