The foreign ministry says that it looks forward to working with Xiomara Castro, the president–elect of Central American ally Honduras.
During the campaign, Castro had pledged to cut ties with Taiwan and establish ties with Beijing instead, prompting Taiwanese diplomats to monitor the campaign closely. However, in recent weeks, Taiwan’s foreign ministry has said it is confident that Taiwan-Honduras relations will persist regardless of the election’s outcome.
The foreign ministry says that Taiwan’s Ambassador to Honduras, Diego Wen, congratulated Castro on winning the election on behalf of President Tsai Ing-wen.
In response to concerns over the new administration, the foreign ministry says that Honduras is an important Central American partner for Taiwan. It said that the two countries have maintained good relations for 80 years. The ministry says that it will continue to pursue strong ties with Honduras during Castro’s administration.
