Minister without Portfolio Audrey Tang will represent Taiwan in delivering the country’s national statement at the US Summit for Democracy. The summit is slated to take place between December 9-10.
Tang, who is informally referred to as Taiwan’s “digital minister,” will also participate in a group panel discussion titled “Countering Digital Authoritarianism and Affirming Democratic Values”.
The summit, organized by US President Joe Biden’s administration, seeks to “renew democracies at home and confront autocracies abroad”. Taiwan is one of 110 delegations that has been invited to participate in the event.
Joining Tang will be Taiwan’s Representative to the US, Hsiao Bi-Khim. Taiwan’s foreign ministry also says that officials from the Cabinet and officials in the areas of foreign affairs, economics, justice, and human rights will listen in on the summit.
Foreign Minister Joseph Wu says that Taiwan’s invitation to the summit is an acknowledgement of Taiwan’s democracy. He says Taiwan will use its seat at the table to tell the world its democratic success story. In addition, Wu says the summit will be a good opportunity for Taiwan to expand cooperation with its partner countries.
