Taiwan’s representative to the US, Hsiao Bi-khim says it is in the interest of all democracies that Taiwan remains democratic. That came during an interview with Japanese broadcaster NHK. She also called on the international community to support Taiwan in the face of Chinese oppression.

In the interview, Hsiao also spoke about Taiwan’s invitation to US President Joe Biden’s Summit for Democracy, which is taking place Thursday and Friday.

Hsiao said that Taiwan will be able to share its democratic experience at the summit. She said Taiwan stands to prove China wrong for saying that democracy is not suitable for Asia.

Hsiao said it is not appropriate for China to oppose Taiwan’s participation in international organizations. She said Taiwan has the right to take part in international events and meetings such as those of the WHO. Hsiao said that as a free and democratic country, Taiwan’s continued international  presence is vital to maintaining peace and stability in the Indo-Pacific region.

Hsiao also stated support for the United States’ ban on cotton imports from Xinjiang due to human rights violations. She also said that democratic countries use artificial intelligence and big data to advance human progress, not as tools of oppression or surveillance.
