President Tsai has responded to the loss of yet another of Taiwan’s diplomatic allies by saying that Taiwan won’t give in to pressure. On Friday, the Central American nation of Nicaragua terminated its diplomatic recognition of Taiwan and announced that it will establish relations with China instead.
Later on Friday, Tsai said that the stronger Taiwan’s democracy becomes and the stronger international support for Taiwan grows, the heavier the pressure from authoritarian powers on Taiwan will be. But Tsai also said that neither diplomatic pressure nor threats will change Taiwan’s insistence on freedom, democracy, and a place among the world’s democratic nations.
Tsai said that pluralistic democracy is one of Taiwan’s special traits, and that Taiwan’s democracy will continue to gather strength and resilience.
