Taiwan’s envoy to the United States, Hsiao Bi-khim, and Minister without Portfolio Audrey Tang have attended the opening of United States President Joe Biden’s “Summit for Democracy”. In a rare sight, these Taiwanese officials shared a screen with the president of the United States.
The summit, organized by US President Joe Biden’s administration, seeks to “renew democracies at home and confront autocracies abroad”. Taiwan’s delegation is one of 110 that have been invited to take part.
Taiwan’s representative office in the US says that Hsiao and Tang were present throughout the entire first day of the event. Both shared accounts of Taiwan’s democratic resilience and how it overcame past challenges.
Audrey Tang is scheduled to deliver Taiwan’s national statement on the summit’s second day. She will also participate in a group panel discussion titled “Countering Digital Authoritarianism and Affirming Democratic Values.”
