A delegation from France’s National Assembly arrived in Taiwan Wednesday morning. François de Rugy, chair of the French National Assembly's France-Taiwan Parliamentary Friendship Group, is at the head of the six-person delegation. The delegation is scheduled to stay in Taiwan until Sunday.
Upon arrival, de Rugy said he was happy to be in Taiwan and wanted to speak to government officials about economic and cultural issues.
Taiwan’s Presidential Office has announced that the delegation will meet with President Tsai Ing-wen on Thursday. It says that de Rugy’s visit comes three months after a five-person delegation from the French Senate visited Taiwan. The Presidential Office says that this is the first time ever that two parliamentary groups from the same European country have visited Taiwan within such a short timeframe.
Previously, de Rugy proposed a resolution in the French National Assembly calling on the French government to support Taiwan’s participation in international organizations, which successfully passed a vote.
