Several members of the Iowa State Senate in the US have joined the White House and US State Department in calling for solidarity with Taiwan. That’s after Nicaragua severed diplomatic ties with Taiwan in favor of ties with China on December 9.
The state senators say they agree with the White House and State Department stance that the US should encourage all who respect democracy, transparency, rule of law, and economic prosperity to work more with Taiwan.
They also say that Taiwan is pragmatic in its relations with the international community. They say that Taiwan has the ability and willingness to meet its responsibilities, and to work with the world in the areas of humanitarian aid, disease control, and intellectual property rights. They also say that Taiwan’s diplomatic partnerships within the Western Hemisphere bring significant economic and security benefits to the countries of the region.
