Japan foreign ministry plans to open Taiwan affairs office next year

Japan’s foreign ministry has announced plans to establish an office charged with Taiwanese affairs and the East China Sea. The ministry will establish the office next year as part of a broader reorganization.

Speaking to the Japanese media Friday, Japanese lawmaker Sato Masahisa said that the office will be placed under the purview of the ministry’s Asian and Oceanian Affairs Bureau.

Sato said the foreign ministry is setting up the office because of an increased workload brought on by tensions in the Taiwan Strait. The office will increase the Japanese foreign ministry’s ability to react to developments in the strait.
