Education Minister Pan Wen-chung says his ministry estimates five to eight Taiwanese athletes will qualify for the 2022 Winter Olympics. That came during a report Pan gave to the legislature on Monday. The education ministry oversees the sports administration, which manages the country’s Olympic operations.
Pan says, so far, only Taiwanese speed skater Huang Yu-ting has qualified to compete in next year’s Winter Olympics. He says, however, that qualifying events are still taking place, and that the sports administration expects Taiwan to send five to eight athletes to compete in next year’s Olympics.
One legislator said that the government needs to take care of its Olympians, and called on officials to help make proper arrangements for the athletes. Pan says that the sports administration started these 2022 Olympic plans for Taiwan’s athletes during the third quarter of 2021.
When asked whether or not Taiwan will follow suit with the US, UK, Canada, and Australia’s decision to diplomatically boycott the 2022 Beijing Olympics, Pan said that his priority is Taiwan’s athletes.
