Taiwan’s state-owned electric company Taipower says that the nation saved 1.5 billion kWh of electricity this year. That’s the most energy Taiwan has ever conserved over the course of a year. It’s also 25% more than Taiwan conserved last year.
Taipower Chairman Yang Wei-fuu said Thursday that this energy is the equivalent to the amount of electricity used by 410,000 households each year.
Despite the achievement, conserving energy remains a challenge. Yang said that the total amount of electricity Taiwan consumed this year actually went up 4.6%. He said that this jump in power consumption is something that Taiwan hasn’t seen in the past ten years.
Yang said that with Taiwan’s economy predicted to grow 6% this year and 4% next year, conserving electricity and cutting carbon emissions are both urgent goals.
