Foreign Minister Joseph Wu says that Taiwan’s diplomatic ties with the Central American nation of Honduras are not at risk. Wu was speaking before the legislature’s foreign affairs committee on Thursday.
Wu’s reassurance comes several weeks after the country’s president-elect appeared to back away from remarks she made during campaigning about cutting ties with Taiwan. It also comes just short of two weeks after the neighboring country of Nicaragua severed its ties with Taiwan and recognized Beijing.
Wu says that Taiwan continues to communicate with the Honduran government and the team of Honduran President-elect Xiomara Castro.
Asked if he will resign should Honduras ultimately decide to cut ties with Taiwan, Wu said that he will guarantee his utmost effort to preserve diplomatic ties.
