Lawmakers agree to send 2022 budget bill back to committee review
Legislature President Yu Shyi-kun has held discussions between the DPP and KMT that have lifted an impasse over next year's government budget.

Lawmakers have agreed that they will send the central government’s plan for its 2022 budget back to legislative committees for review.

On Tuesday, DPP lawmakers had used their majority to force through a vote to skip the usual review by the legislature’s committees and send the budget bill straight to a second reading. They said that the main opposition party, the KMT, had been deliberately slowing the review process down. KMT lawmakers sharply criticized the move, saying it brushes aside proper legislative procedure.

On Thursday, Legislature President Yu Shyi-kun held a mediation session, during which both sides agreed to back down. On Friday, the DPP caucus agreed to send the budget plan back to the committee review stage. Meanwhile, the KMT has agreed that the plan will pass its third reading before January 28.
