The Cabinet has established a task force to ensure that prices are kept fair amid a period of heightened inflation. In recent months, supply chain issues have caused a worldwide spike in prices of consumer goods.
The task force includes personnel from Taiwan’s legal, consumer, economic, agricultural, and finance institutions.
One of the task force’s functions is to make sure that businesses aren’t using inflation as a cover for price gouging.
During a report to the legislature on Monday, Economics Minister Wang Mei-hua said that her ministry will analyze market prices and compare them to costs to make sure prices in Taiwan remain fair.
One lawmaker has proposed canceling labor subsidies for businesses found to be engaged in price gouging. Wang says that this proposal may be enacted into policy pending further discussion.
