Taiwan loves a good New Year’s celebration, but those in Taiwan looking for warm temperatures and clear skies this New Year’s may do well to head to the south.
Revelers at New Year’s parties in northern and eastern Taiwan this year can expect chilly weather and maybe even some rain. Northern Taiwan could see temperatures as low as 13C from Thursday until New Year’s Day.
In central and southern Taiwan, by contrast, temperatures in the period from Thursday through New Year’s could reach as high as 26C.
There’s also a better chance of catching the last sunset of 2021 or the first sunrise of 2022 in the south. Unlike the north, where some rain is expected, areas south of Taoyuan will be mostly cloudy to clear.
Luckily for those looking to see the last rays of 2021 in Taiwan, the final sun rays of the year will come in the south, in Tainan’s Qigu District. There, sunset on New Year’s Eve is expected at 5:25pm. Those looking to see the first light of 2022 in Taiwan should head to Orchid Island, off Taiwan’s east coast, where sunrise will come at 6:32am, or they can catch the first sunlight of the year on Taiwan proper at Longkeng on Taiwan’s southern tip.
