Taiwan-based Hong Kong illustrator Lau Kwong Shing is calling for solidarity with Stand News, a pro-democracy media outlet that Hong Kong authorities have shuttered.
Lau was speaking in light of the Hong Kong police’s arrest Wednesday of six people connected with Stand News on charges of conspiracy to publish a seditious publication.
Lau told Taiwan’s Central News Agency that seeing the arrests reminded him of the time when people connected with another Hong Kong publication, the Apple Daily, were arrested. He lamented yet another media outlet being shuttered in Hong Kong. Lau made an illustration of the arrest at Stand News and posted it on social media. So far, over 1,000 followers have shared it.
Lau is the author of “A Fallen City”, a volume of sketches drawn from scenes from Hong Kong’s 2019 pro-democracy protests. The comic series was first published in Taiwan. Lau has been in exile in Taiwan since July.
