Opposition party chairman Eric Chu has welcomed the return of defeated presidential candidate Han Kuo-yu back into the public eye. Han represented the KMT, which is Taiwan’s largest opposition party, in the 2020 presidential election, losing to the incumbent president, Tsai Ing-wen.
Han has avoided public appearances since losing the presidential election and a subsequent recall vote that saw him deposed as mayor of Kaohsiung City. However, on Sunday, Han returned to launch his new book, “Mr. Han, Knock Knock,” at a well-attended event in central Taipei.
Some commentators have suggested KMT Chairman Eric Chu may fear Han’s return, as it could dilute Chu’s authority over the party.
Speaking on Monday, Chu dismissed those commentators’ views, saying that he is delighted to see Han return to public life. Chu praised Han for his charitable work, and says he wishes the very best for all members of the KMT.
Chu says that Han sent him a copy of the book, and that the two politicians held a long discussion on a number of topics. The KMT chairman says he will do all he can to help Han in his public service.
