Taiwan’s population shrank by about 185,000 over the past year. That’s according to the latest statistics from the interior ministry, which announced its findings on Monday.
At the end of last year, Taiwan’s population stood at 23,375,314 people. In 2021, there were 153,820 births — a new low for the country. Meanwhile, there were 183,732 deaths, leading to a net decrease of about 30,000.
It’s the second year in a row that deaths in Taiwan have outnumbered births.
People emigrating from Taiwan was the largest factor in the population decrease. In total, around 150,000 more people left Taiwan than entered.
