President Tsai Ing-wen says Taiwan’s government will pool resources to foster a new generation of interdisciplinary talent in the field of international trade. Tsai’s words on Monday come as Taiwan seeks integration into international trade agreements on a number of different fronts.
In a speech on Monday, Tsai said Taiwan would integrate resources from different government ministries to provide “diverse and cross-disciplinary” development programs. She says this will help establish a “national team” of Taiwanese talent in international business and trade.
Tsai says Taiwan is highly reliant on international trade. She says Taiwan’s strong economic growth after accession into the World Trade Organization in 2002 shows the value of international trade cooperation.
Taiwan has intensified its push for integration into international trade agreements in recent months. Last week, Taiwan and Canada began discussions on signing a foreign investment agreement. In addition, Taiwan has applied to join the CPTPP free trade agreement, whose members count Japan, Singapore and Australia, among others.
