Japanese lawmaker Yasuhide Nakayama said that the US should invite Taiwan to take part in military exercises in the US. He was speaking at the first Japan-Taiwan security partnership forum held virtually on Tuesday. The event took place amid concerns from Japan over heightened tensions in the Taiwan Strait.
Nakayama has served as Senior Vice Minister of Defense of Japan. He said that Japan, Taiwan and the United States can develop an alliance to invite Taiwan to take part in military exercises in the US. He said that Taiwan should participate in US military exercises despite the restrictions under the Sino-Japanese Peace Treaty.
During the forum, Taiwan lawmaker Chao Tien-lin suggested Taiwan and Japan should enact a Taiwan Relations Act and a Japan Relations Act with each other to upgrade ties between the two countries.
Chao said that Japan has emphasized the importance of stability in the Taiwan Strait and voiced support for Taiwan’s participation in international organizations. He said Taiwan and Japan should help each other when Taiwan faces pressure from China.
