Taiwan is preparing to send medical experts and supplies to the Pacific island nation of Palau to help the country tackle a COVID outbreak. US health officials say that many of the new cases of COVID-19 in the country belong to the Omicron variant.

Palau is one of 14 countries that maintain full diplomatic ties with Taiwan. Taiwan is preparing to ship donated medical supplies to Palau, including hundreds of thousands of masks and over 10,000 rapid COVID tests.

In addition, Taipei’s Shin Kong Wu Ho Su Memorial Hospital is stepping in to provide medical advice. The hospital has already conducted two remote consultations to understand the situation in Palau. It is also sending a team of four experts to the country on Saturday. While in Palau, the team will meet with Palau’s president, and will discuss the pandemic situation in Palau with local health officials and experts from the US Centers for Disease Control.
